Three students arrive in Rayopampa during Carnival. Florinda, a young peasant woman, falls in love with one of them. By the time the villagers realize they are Shining Path guerrillas, it's too late. They kill an official and abandon the village, taking Florinda and several children with them. The village is caught in the crossfire between Shining Path and the military. Faced with destruction and death, Florinda abandons her love and chooses life.
