When war broke out between Peru and Chile in April 1879, the ships of the Peruvian navy prepared to sail south. Newspapers of the time sent their correspondents to the areas where the battles were to be fought. Julio Octavio Reyes was assigned as the sole correspondent aboard the monitor "Huáscar." On this ship, as a privileged witness, Reyes would recount in his dispatches all the exploits of its valiant crew under the command of Miguel Grau, the gentleman of the seas.
