Cinema as neurological rehabilitation therapy? Much has been written about the relationship between cinema and memory, mostly from a philosophical perspective, but the idea that the former can achieve anything concrete in the face of a biological failure of the latter is quite improbable. Or at least it was until Juan Daniel made his feature-length antidote, Reminiscences. That's right, because the Peruvian filmmaker managed to recover from his amnesia by watching his family films and videos—ranging from 8mm to cell phone footage—with which he then decided to make a kind of documentary about his own cure. What's impressive about the case, leaving aside the medical aspect, is the autonomous power of the union of all those images, a procedure whose forcefulness places Reminiscences firmly within the experimental tradition. But it never ceases to be one of the most heartbreaking documentaries about the life of a man and his surroundings. (BAFICI)
