Sofia, a young Peruvian woman who recently graduated in Art History from Italy, returns to Peru and begins searching for a mysterious missing painting depicting an angel. Her intuition leads her to Machu Picchu, where she meets Matias, an enigmatic Western doctor who has adopted shamanic techniques and the use of hallucinogenic herbs like ayahuasca to treat drug addicts at a rehabilitation center. A magical and strange attraction envelops them, but they must preserve their love, protecting it from the memory of Amaru, Matias's ex-wife, and from Sofia's own extraordinary experiences, in which the protagonists are angels from the viceroyalty era, spirits, and people of flesh and blood.

Película que marca el debut de la directora peruana Sandra Wiese (como casi todas las cintas que se han estrenado últimamente es parte de una nueva generación de realizadores). Cuando el cielo es azul es un nuevo intento en nuestro cine por salir de la impronta de los géneros (tan al uso en este medio casi siempre tratado como única alternativa), pero lástima que en este afán resulte decididamente fallida.
